How to calculate engagement rate

Take the creator's last 10-12 regular posts (skip giveaways and paid boosts), average the likes and comments, add them together, divide by the follower count and multiply by 100. For example, 800 likes + 40 comments on 25,000 followers is 3.36%.

Typical Instagram engagement rates by account size

Account sizeTypical engagement rate
Nano (under 10K)4%-6%
Micro (10K-50K)2.5%-4%
Mid-tier (50K-200K)1.5%-2.5%
Macro (200K-1M)1%-1.8%
Mega (1M+)0.5%-1.2%

A rough guide - rates vary a lot by niche, content format and region. Use it to spot outliers, not as a hard rule.

What engagement rate tells you - and what it doesn't

A healthy engagement rate shows the audience is real and paying attention. An unusually low rate can point to inactive or bought followers; an unusually high one is worth a closer look at who is commenting.

What it can't tell you is whether those engaged followers would buy your product. A fitness creator with 6% engagement is still the wrong choice for a luxury skincare brand if her audience doesn't match. Frequently asked questions

What is a good engagement rate on Instagram?

It depends on account size. As a rough guide, 4%-6% is typical for nano accounts under 10K followers, 2.5%-4% for micro accounts (10K-50K), and around 1%-1.8% for macro accounts (200K-1M).

How do you calculate Instagram engagement rate?

Add the average likes and average comments per post, divide by the follower count, and multiply by 100. Use 10-12 recent regular posts for the average.

Why do bigger accounts have lower engagement rates?

As an account grows, a larger share of followers are casual or inactive, and the algorithm shows each post to a smaller share of them. That's why micro-influencers often outperform on engagement.

Can engagement be faked?

Yes - through engagement pods, bought likes or comment bots. Check whether comments are specific to the post, and whether the likes-to-followers ratio is consistent across posts.
